Wales Coast Path

The 870 mile Wales Coast Path was opened on May 5th 2012. Although mostly using existing footpaths its completion required some new paths to be created and older ones modified. It starts “officially” at Queensferry on the Dee estuary and finishes at Chepstow. Since I live near Chepstow I did it the other way round.

If you are going to walk the route I would recommend starting with a look at the official website where any problems or temporary path diversions should be up to date.

However I don’t think the site is very easy to use and you might be better off checking out the relevant section of the huge LDWA (Long Distance Walkers Association) website.

There are many printed paper guides to the path both as a whole and in sections; I always like to carry a guide and a physical map as well as my GPS enabled smartphone.

For up to date (if somewhat random) comment and feedback you might also look at the Wales Coast Path community Facebook page. Joining this group is very easy.

As I said, I started the path on opening day. At the beginning I did the route in day walks but extended this as I ventured further from home. Sometimes I was on my own, often with friends. Mostly I stayed in pubs and B&Bs with a few days camping.  I did a post for every day of my walk. I finished on August 15th 2015 – some 78 posts later. It’s a fabulous walk – I highly recommend it. I hope you enjoy my journey.
